Boaz has been serving the legal needs of Central New Jersey residents on immigration matters since 2002. In that vein, we encounter many clients who are victims of domestic violence. In New Jersey there were 71,901 domestic violence offenses reported by police in 2007 alone. This is a startling number given that domestic violence incidents are widely underreported. Immigrant women are particularly vulnerable victims of domestic violence. Their situations are exacerbated by the fact that by leaving their abusers, they may be jeopardizing their immigration status. Immigrant victims of domestic violence are even more reluctant than other victims to leave their abusive partner because it may mean cancellation of their visas, loss of green card status or even deportation. Studies have found that an abuser's power and control over a victim's immigration status significantly increases the likelihood of abuse for those victims. This, coupled with additional issues of cultural stigma, language barriers and the victim's unfamiliarity with her rights or the family court system, leaves a gaping need within the immigrant community. Boaz has risen to meet this emerging need, and is able to assist those clients that require relief from the Family Courts. Boaz provides representation to immigrant victims of domestic violence with family law matters, including but not limited to; v temporary restraining orders v final restraining orders v divorces v legal separations v child custody issues We welcome referrals for eligible clients to our New Brunswick office for consultation on these matters. Our legal clinic is open for initial intakes for Family and/or Immigration matters on Mondays & Tuesdays 9-7, Thursdays 9-4 and Saturdays 9-4.
